Weekly Roundup: Hallmark Channel Original Movies

weekly-roundup-movies

Since 2000, the Hallmark Channel has been producing exclusive television films which are called “Hallmark Channel Original Movies.” At present, they are being shown on TV every Sunday and are mostly chick flicks ranging from family dramas to romantic-comedies. This weekly roundup features five Hallmark Channel Original Movies and my insights about them. 🙂

1. Summer Villa   ★★★✩✩

This flick is about a writer needing some creative juices, and a chef needing some space from his critics. They wound up sharing a French summer villa where after spending time together, they realized it was just one another they needed to get back on feet from their personal struggles.

Insight: I like Hilarie Burton and writers as main characters but; story-wise, the plot is a bit cliche. It’s an enjoyable, feel-good movie that you’d like while you’re watching it but would easily forget after some time.

2. A Novel Romance   ★★✩✩✩

A romance novelist keeps his identity concealed to a woman who makes book reviews for a living. Problem ensued as they started dating and he forgot the number one rule of relationships: honesty.

Insight: This one’s plot is unique but a bit dry. It could’ve been better if there’s a likable character in the movie. The leads were okay but I didn’t feel any sense of pity for the woman or a little concern for the novelist.

3. 12 Gifts of Christmas   ★★★★✩

With Christmas just around the corner, a busy marketing head hires a personal shopper to buy gifts for his family and friends.

Insight: I really like this film (maybe because I have read One Hundred Names which also has a personal shopper character in the story hahaha). The build-up on the role of the female personal shopper was good enough to justify her choice of gifts for the business man’s family and friends. I also liked the unhurried transformation of the man about giving importance to his blessings.

4. Love on the Sidelines   ★★★✩✩

A fashion designer takes the role of a personal assistant to an injured football player. Love blossoms as they get to know each other.

Insight: The movie was good but it didn’t leave an impact on me. I like the characters and the uncommon job of the lady. As it is a romantic film, I hope they did a better escalation of the relationship between the main characters.

5. Surprised by Love   ★★★✩✩

This story is about a woman who just wants his achiever boyfriend to be accepted by her family. She teams up with her good-for-nothing ex-boyfriend to attend her parent’s anniversary party and convince them who’s really best for her.

Insight: Another Hilarie Burton movie that makes me love her more! I like the theme of this film as it not only centers around romantic love but family and relationships as well. The plot is quite absurd (because why would you want your boyfriend to feel better by comparing him to your ex!) but overall, it is actually good.

Well, I have watched more than 5 movies from Hallmark but these are the ones that made the cut. And I know I need to improve reviewing movies or books – I really tried this time! 🙂

All smiles,

Donna, the daydreamer
